Because of the extreme amount of gain in the circuitry, the normal mode is furnished with a very slow automatic ground tuning to prevent drifting up or down when tuned to the threshold. It runs between 20 to 30 hrs on 8 AA batteries. Weights 3 1/4 lbs I have the original owners manual and a set of 1/4" Calrad headphones. I bought this machine to take out coin and nugget hunting when visiting a friend in Colorado a little over 4 yrs ago. It has been used sparingly and in mint condition. There are No scratches on the unit, coil or coil cover. It works perfect and in all modes and is in a one of a kind condition that you don't find anymore. I do take care of my machines
