The Howie Power Up

Dual Power Source Battery Pack is for

White's Detectors:

XLT; DFX; MXT; M6; QXT; BEACH HUNTER;
CLASSIC SL; GMT, QUANTUM, Spectra V³

It comes with an 1800mah NiMH pack
or you can put in 8 AA alkaline batteries
(AA batteries not included.)

This superior dual-power source battery pack is brought to you by the same guys who make and sell the amazing Howie Beach Scoop.

We call it the
 Howie Power Up

It features a new battery case from White's Electronics and a new, high-quality rechargeable 1800mah NiMH battery pack.

The Howie Power Up NiMH pack is far superior
to the standard Whites pack, #802-5211, which
uses a NiCad battery...yet it costs less.

NIMH batteries provide up to double the run times of NiCAD batteries.

Plus this pack has a brilliant feature which no other White's pack offers:

  It works as either a rechargeable or AA battery pack.

If your Howie Power Pack ever does run out of power just slide open the case,
drop out the NiMH cell pack and drop in 8 AA batteries
{alt}{alt}
One pack, dual power sources.

For the greatest power security
with the least
expense.

How obvious is that?

Looks like a great idea. Do you have diode reverse current protection on the charger feed? No one will try to charge the alkaline cells? I don't want to sound critical but the the solder joints on the charging wires to the case bus look cold. You need a lot of heat and flux to get a good joint on the larger and plated case terminals.

Thanks. I've been using it, and I love it. As for the solder joints...in fact, you don't see the solder joints in the photo. They are on the underside of the plated case terminals. What you see on top of the plate is the spots where I initially had soldered the wires to the top, but the space between the plates and the sliding cover is so close that the cover sliding over the plates was rubbing on the solder joints, so I moved them to the underside. I filed, or more likely I dremeled the solder off the topside, I don't remember which, but I removed the solder so the cover would slide with no rubbing there.

In fact I used flux and a small torch to do the solder joints. Those were "hot" joints to be sure.

There's no diode in the case.

It is unlikely anyone will use alkalines as long as the charger and nimh pack are working, however, Murphy's Law says that sooner or later someone will charge alkalines in the case, by accident or on purpose, and there is a potential hazard there. Which is at least one good reason nobody else offers such a convertible case. I haven't sold any yet, and I guess I probably won't, now that I think about that. However, it's a good project if anyone wants to save $50 on a whites rechargable nimh pack.

I haven't seen anything other than a center positive wall wart in the past 10 years or more. However, a bridge on the input is always a good safety device. Particularly if someone plugs in an AC wart by mistake.

That's really a shame. It's such a worthwhile item for White's owners.

Do yourself a favor and put the price on the page just over the "Buy It Now" button. Some people believe that if you press it, PayPal will charge you on the spot or won't let you back out. Your price is very, very reasonable and your shipping is perfectly priced. You will have sales if you do that. Trust me. My wife and I own and maintain 27 web shops and as long as your price if reasonable, you will get more impulse buyers that way.

You are probably losing some customers who fear the "Buy It Now" button.

White's XLT & VX3

Go Up Go Down

I am interested in the Howie Powerpack for my new White's VX3 but would like to know if there are any reviews from people that have used it.  I already ordered the White.s unit but if this is more powerful and gives me a longer hunting time, I'd certainly be interested but don't want to be the first to use it.  Had anyone been using it?
