I like these stories where the old farmers come upon meteorites and get some extra bucks. Sue

". . .  It was 11 days after the fall that L.B. Etter was driving his tractor along his farmland in Menlow, just west of Interstate 35 and Abbott, when he spotted something out of the ordinary.

?Ive cut and bailed this patch of hay for years, so I knew that was something that wasnt supposed to be there,? the 77-year-old farmer and rancher said.

Etter had followed the news reports about the meteorite finds near West, but that was about seven to eight miles southeast ?as the crow flies? from his place. Still, he kept the nearly 4-pound stony meteorite, dumping it in the back of his pickup to go on a fertilizer run to West.

Women working at the fertilizer plant remarked that it was indeed a meteorite, and when L.B. returned home, his wife, Polly, wrapped it up in a towel for safekeeping. . . . . . "

Hi Sue   Waveing

Could you tell me more about meterorites ?   are they metalic enough to be detected?   and have you  pics of any? so that I might identify one if I saw one.   Ive probably tripped over them by now and not known what they were  Smiley

 Waveing Aussie,
Meteorites are common to all of us since they fall from space and I think that is neat - we usually have such different items in our separate areas. Some meteorites are iron so they could be detected or attract a magnet, some are stone. I believe nearly all meteorites contain some nickel, too. They shouldn"t look like the typical, common rocks in your area and would be heavy for their size. Depending on how long they"ve been exposed to the elements on the earth, their appearance can have a black crust, if they"re new, and possibly rusty, if old. Their value depends on uniqueness and the more in a fall, the less they"re worth. Collectors, universities, museums all want them so many are sliced and sold. Meteorites are usually named for the nearest post office/town - at least in the US.

While we"re out detecting, having an idea of what might be a meteorite is worthwhile. As another member mentioned, hot rocks were piled out of the way in Arizona because they interfered with detecting and they turned out to be meteorites. Here"s a couple links that you might find useful. Both are informative & have photos of some full sized meteorites. I like a UK site as it shows meteorites pictured out in the desert. Another shows Australian ones. Of course you can google and find more. Sue

Thanks Sue  Kiss
Will study them a bit more .   Australia is more than 50% desert or semi arid so Meteorites should be a bit easier to find , the only problem is Australia is nearly as big as USA in area and some parts have never been walked on by whiteman so its a big job to go treking out in the wilderness knowing there is no support if you get into trouble ,

I hope he does sell it, that will help subsidise some more crops.

Aus, that's why I picked that one link where met. were in desert. They'd be hard to find, at random, in vegetative areas or anywhere actually. Just an awareness of what they could look like is about all we can do unless one falls and you go out searching it's path. Your description of the interior sounds like the great escape, but I realize perils. Is it all just government land? You could go there if you wanted to get away for awhile? Sue

There are some parts of Australia that are aboriginal reserves and most of the interior is owend or leased for cattle ranches some cattle ranches are more than 200miles across .
Australia is certainly a land of contrasts we've got snow fields down the south ,where some of the biggest gold nuggets in the world have  been found ,  tropical rainforests up north where some of the richest alluvial gold was found late 1800's and desert wilderness out west , where some of Australias richest gold mines still operate .
If you want adventure this is the place to go .  We,ve got it all except people only 23million unlike USA I think about  250million .

Hi Aussie! Wow - no idea gold was everywhere. And then there's the opals - you guys have it all. I remember reading about people living in dugouts with opal walls and, whenever they needed some money, they'd just chip off a bit. Don't know if that's true or not, but gave me some good mental visuals  Smiley Sue

Yep its true about the Opals Ive been to a couple of places , one is  "Lightning Ridge" one is Anaky , Andamooka and the other is Cooper Pedy. It is very dry there hardly any rain and at Cooper Pedy they dig underground rooms and live in them because it is so hot there sometimes up to 45deg c  and its the only way to get away from the heat .  and as a bonus you can chip out another room and earn your living too . Grin
Just type in Cooper Pedy and do a search one site, ritas travel ,shows photos of some underground accomodation . and while youre at it do a search for , Hand of Faith , gold nugget . that will blow you away .
