Park visitor finds 5.47-carat diamond

MURFREESBORO, Arkansas (AP) -- A Wisconsin man visiting a state park took home the ultimate souvenir: a 5.47-carat canary diamond.

Bob Wehle of Ripon, Wisconsin, found the diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro October 14. The park is the world's only publicly operated diamond site where visitors are allowed to search and keep any gems they find.

"At first glance, it makes you think of lemon drop candy," Stolarz said.

Sorry, I didn't mean to step on your toes with that post - I didn't know if you'd see it or not. I was pretty excited when I saw the latest large diamond as I'd probably not even paid attention to the story if you hadn't started the subject. I'm not that far from Arkansas and looked at the map & directions on the web site, but I'd have to go to another map site to fully understand where it's located.

So, they just turn you loose with a shovel and you dig and sift to your heart's delight? Several years ago I visited some of the ruby mines from USTiger's link on his gem and gold mines post, and you could shovel on your own, but it was easier & faster to buy a bucket of dirt as they were using a back hoe on the site. Sue

Yes- They bulldoze areas -then can can either "speck" for them or you can dig the material- then screen and wash. Its really up to you.

Saw this diamond on CNN earlier this week.  They said it could easily go in the $60,000 plus range due to the fact it was one flawless piece.  I always wanted to go dig for diamonds, but never had the chance.  Perhaps, one of these days there will be one there waiting for me.

That's kind of how I look at relic hunting nowadays....treasure the time you share with your friends....it will always be better than the stuff you find.

Best from VA Beach,
Steve

It's probably not quite like what you might think it is.

Actually....I've seen quite a few photos and done quite a bit of reading about the place myself.   I just think it would be an interesting place to go.
