In this day and age, studying geology by using Google Earth seems a much less costly endeavor. In years gone by, I used to subscribe to the NASA service for satellite imagery and paid a fortune for Oceanographic Survey reports with photographs. Today, thanks to Google's billions, they provide satellite image for free. In some cases, the resolution is good enough to see an object smaller than a card table.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
