Hi, I'm an amateur geologist who likes to hunt around for meteorites in the most northern parts of europe.

Welcome to this forum.

Do you use a metal detector to find meteorites, and if you do, which one ?

Waow  Shocked

That should give you results ! Can you post some pics of found meteorites. I found some weird stones responding to my md's on the beach over here (belgium) and still couldn't decide wether they are meteorites or just hot rocks.

Thanks.

I'm afraid to say that I haven't actually found any yet (although others have) but I think there are some good youtube videos that show small meteorites by a youtube member called Mr Meterorite. I'd say that if you have a rock that is making a detector respond then it is either a meteorite or a rock that contains a high level of an iron related mineral such as magnetite. I have found magnetite with my detector and it wasn't discriminated by the GPX like pure iron is (I think the GPX does excellent discrimination with a DD coil by the way). Mafic rocks like a magnetic basalt don't get a response from the GPX as far I have found.

Thank you for the youtube info. Will have a look.

I use an old VLF/TR Beachcomber, it has a "Minerals/Metals" stand (see picture), the minaral stand does only accept targets in the iron minerals range.

The small stones i found give either weak and loud signals.

This detector is of course not my main unit, but it is fun to use.

Thanks for the photo. I'm no expert on VLF detectors but they seem to be much better at making guesses as to what the target is.

From my geology studies I believe that meteorites give a signal because they are often high in nickel/iron alloy (like the earth's core) and this is unusual to find in the earth's crust so a rock that gives a strong iron like signal has a good chance of being one. From the small meteorites I have found through beachcombing on beaches in southern scandanavia, they are very dark, heavy, well rounded and often have little rusty looking pockmarks on the outside.

Mr Meteorite on Youtube seems to be using a Goldbug 2 while his friends are using Minelab PI detectors like mine.

I should add that the beachcombing was a long time ago and I donated the small rocks I found to my geology club and I don't have pix of those unfortunately. I haven't yet found anything with the GPX but hopefully if and when I do it will be much bigger.

A thing I forgot to mention about the White's Beachcomber and meteorites : once in the "minerals" mode, the unit will NOT RESPOND to non ferrous metals.  A big "plus". No aluminium trash ! Just Iron and iron minerals.

Those oldies weren't THAt bad !
