Hi all

Can you help identify this?
Found it about 20 years ago and it's been lying in the garden ever since it has a natural shine to it and I was wondering is it could not be fossilized wood it?s weight is 5.2 Kg.

Best Regards
Xavier

Looks like a lava flow to me, Xavier. Petrified wood has a more uniform flow to the calcified fibers.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I suppose it could be wood, how heavy is it? The color seems strange though, possible it was burnt or something. I added a pic of some fossilized wood i got from the redwood forest in the early 70's, might not be the best pic and it is in one of my fish tanks.

Looks more like a lava flow to me. The coloring is to dark for the wood I have seen and the grain looks more like striations where it pushed through. Also the smooth portions where no grain shows makes me think lava. The shine comes from the speed which it cooled at. Very fast cooling lava becomes obsidian. Just my take on it though.

Still a nifty garden piece Smiley

Xavier,

I'd lean towards the lava answer.....especially after seeing how shining some types of lava are.
But I also would NOT rule out the possibility of it being "fossilized" wood either.   Generally when we talk of petrified wood, we're talking silica replacement.   However, there are plenty of examples from various coal fields of "fossilized" wood chunks in the form of "coal".....which appear similar to "chunk" charcoal except for weight.

Hi to you all

@ Outback Yes I found it in SA in the Transvaal

@ Idaho Jones Thanks for your input I will post more pic's of it tomorrow I don?t know of any volcanic rock or volcano?s in the area but then I was not there three million years ago.

@ BA I also thought of coal when I looked at it from a different angle you will see on the new pic?s that I will post in the morning

Best Regards to you all

Xavier,

I'm going to show my ignorance of the geography of South Africa, but have you thought about checking with one of the following museums:
East London Museum
The Old Library Museum in Graaf Reinert
or The Natural Sciences Museum in Grahamstown ?
