Any where there has been volcanic activity is a good place to look but if there are traces of swamps then all the better petrified wood is a good thing to find also Olivine and shiny black stone are a good signs.

Minnesota that I know of has no Diamond mines, However u can go to the Arkasas Crater of Diamonds State Park,

    and hunt for all the Diamonds u want. a few of the worlds largest diamonds have come from there.

To learn what to look for in Minnesota, you probably want to study the Canadian Diamond prospecting pages more than the South African and/or Arkansas since the geological structure in Minnesota has more in common with the Canadian Diamond fields than with the other locations I mentioned.
