Go Up Go Down

With chunks of meteorites fetching thousands of dollars on the commercial market, news of the spectacular meteor that soared over parts of Maryland and Pennsylvania early Monday has touched off a cosmic treasure hunt.

Professional meteorite hunters and collectors are scrambling to track down, grab (or buy if they must) any pieces of the Mason-Dixon meteor that might have survived the fall to Earth.

"This is the Super Bowl," Steve "Meteorite Man" Arnold said Wednesday night after flying in from Arkansas to join the hunt. Meteorites can sell for hundreds of dollars per gram, he said, making some worth far more than their weight in gold, which now sells for about $30 a gram.

How would you even begin to know where to look for a meteorite? Do you hunt as a group to find them?

Hopefully it was an iron meteorite so it can be detected.  If it was a stony meteorite You'll have to just stuble onto the pieces or look for the small craters of the fragments.
 I read a little about this meteorite and it seems that some people had their house shake so it would seem that a good size piece did hit the ground somewhere.
 I bet there are a lot of airplanes flying around looking for it.  If it was in FL  I would be looking for it.

Quesea, kayakpirate;

My cousin had a small one go through her shed roof a couple years ago. It was supposed to be one of several pieces and weighed between 5 and 10 pounds, big enough to get in one of the local news papers. Great

I told her not to let anyone talk her out of it as they are worth many $$$$! I will have to ask, now and find out what eventually happened.

 What state does your cousin live?  I was driving through Louisiana and saw one fall one night around 2am.  It looked to hit around 200 feet away but it was all swampy area.
 My friend showed me one he found while fishing in Montana. It was strange looking so I looked it up.  Best I could tell it was a moon meteorite and I estimated it to be worth $10,000. He said cool and took it back home and put it back in a drawer. lol
 He also told me where a very large meteor is.  He said it was big enough to sit on. I may have to go check this out!

kayakpirate;

What state, you ask?

Hmmmmmm. There are other places, in this world, that do not have states...

Northern British Columbia, Canada. About 76 miles, by road, 40 miles by air, from my location which is in South Dawson Creek, BC, Canada.... state?? Did I STATE it well enough?

Sad state may apply Shocked

We do get a lot of states, but they are in peoples names... like Qvikstad, etc., some -horst/hersts too, but they are really rural.... meaning farm, not state... hey, just having fun...  Funny

No, I doubt if you saw this one, it would have been a bit over-the-horizon from you.

I can just about picture you, though, out in that swamp, with a big magnet on a small barge, trying to suck that thing up out of the muck! It could be worth it, you know. It sure would not go deep, if it hit water first. Some kind of clamshell might work, too.

Have fun with your magnet, build a big detector loop. too.

I have to say that is not a great idea to hide a fresh fall. It has to be documented (take the landing point with a GPS and a compass, take pictures (better if you use a cube scale for reference), etc.), and analized as soon as possible to determine if it's really a meteorite. A non-documented meteorite is not quite appealing, and there's a lot of those in Morocco for a cheap price.

Also, you don't have to go on the mood of "I'm gonna be rich!!!", because that don't happens, but you could get a good reward for your find.

Greetings.

Where have you been hiding? Withdraw your cranial protuberance, from the rock granules.

Meteorites ARE worth $$$!

There's no need to insult... What I'm saying is that it's far easier to find a huge golden treasure, than a meteorite that could make somebody rich.

I was also saying that putting a meteorite into a drawer it's not a good idea, and I was giving clues about what to do in the case you find something you believe it's a meteorite.

I have lunar and martian meteorites that could worth up to 250.000$/gram, or even more, but that not means that I could get that money for them at all. Chill out.

Wo! Look who is definitively un-chilly... well I tried to be un-insulting.... everyone has a cranial protrubance, but not everybody does the ostrich bit.... look around a bit, read a few articles, IF your meteorite material has decent provenance, there is no reason why you can not get those $$$! Anytime.

I think meteorites are more common than most believe. My cousin has a 5 lb. chunk, one of several pieces that fell on her property, but they only found one, because it fell through the shop roof.

You probably do not want to sell yours, right?
