Interesting post...looking for a new detector for the beach, but the rocks from space are calling too...decisions, decisions.

Joe, any metal detector that has discrimination normally allows you to set it to zero making it an ideal detector for meteorites. Because two of the three types of meteorites are iron and nickel, consider a good quality machine for your other desires and just be sure it allows you an "all metal" mode of operation. You'll have the best of both worlds that way.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Great looking space rock.

I thought about building a coil, but here is so many out there already made. I was looking at the Garret 2500 much later on as it had some deep seeking coils.

This off board components, I guess there is a post on here somewhere for it?

very interesting subject, probably batter chance of finding meteorites than pot of gold. a p.i. detector with a fairly large coil should work fine.  will probably try it myself  as soon as the the weather permits.   ronsleep.

Bugar, meteorites and tektites are different things.  tektites result from shock melt when a meteorite hits.
not sure if you knew it or not.
thanks for the information on detectors, i'm looking to FINALLY getting out and looking for them instead of sitting in a classroom!
happy hunting!

When meteorite hunting your going to be digging everything. Discrimination on a machine does you no good, it cant tell you whether your target is a meteorite or scrap metal, iron is iron. And why would you not want to dig all your nonferrous metals, just to potentially leave a gold nugget behind, so you'll want to hunt in all metal mode.

That being said, get yourself any deep seeking PI metal detector. If your pockets are deep there's no other choice than the latest Minelab PI gold detector. But if your on a budget or just starting out go for one of the earlier Minelabs: SD2000 SD2100 SD2200 even the more updated SD2100v2 or SD2200v2 can be had for a bargain.

Another detector I would recommend is the Garrett Infinium LS adds the ability to search under water for other things as well, diversity has it's benefits.

Even more important is to use the best detector you have, your eyes. Not all meteorites are iron, some stoney meteorites can stick out like a sore thumb from a distance, so scan the area well.

Hey guys,

I live in southern California, but I am a hop, skip and jump away from the deserts here. I just purchased a BH Pioneer 505, is there a way to set it up to hunt for meteorites, or do I need to purchase a separate MD to do any meteorite hunting? We are planning a trip to some ghost town areas soon(Calico) and I would like to try my hand at some meteorite hunting since we will be close to the deserts.

Thanks!

Barrett

Hunt in All Metal mode not discrimination mode, and dig every target.

The White's Spectra V3i has a Meteorite mode...I would love to go out to Nevada and search with it but thats not going to happen any time soon.  Not to many to be found here in Michigan I expect.
