Aussie;

I used too find these magnetite BBs, in my gold pan and wondered where they came from, how they formed. Then I found a broken garnet with a magnetite center.... since then, I have found lots of them with magnetite centers.

One big problem, those with the magnetite centers, you might find with a locator, BUT they are no good for gems.... unless the core is big enough, in itself... then its Alaska Black Diamond (Hematite.)

The metal feature might help locate a clutch of garnets with some good ones.

homefire, as I point out, above, some garnets have enough iron to give you iron poisoning.... way more than your blood can hold.... heck, I even know where there are radio active ones, just dont tell Iran.

There used to be a type of blacklight, on the market, that produced BOTH short and long. With a special cover on, it filtered out the short and passed long UV, take the filter off and you had short UV. Also, ANY UV is dangerous, it can turn the fluid of your eyes like a fried egg, white, with enough exposure!

homefire;

Interesting article.... maybe one thing wrong with it... they dont use garnets, they use microcrystalline zircon, as garnet melts like wax, if you torch it with a propane torch.

The article was written in 2004, and I think it is out of date.... check out zircons, galactic dating, and Newfoundland, Canada. I watched it on TV.
