Go Up Go Down

Last month on a hike in the Snake River canyon I found this unique formation. Nothing important I just thought it looked interesting the way the lava flowed. Also an old abandoned homestead across the river. This is some harsh country I can only imagine what it was like trying to live here.

I was on the wrong side of the river this time. I have been there but years ago. Problem is now its in the Birds of Prey wilderness and you have to walk or ride horses to get to it. It's about 7 miles in from celebration park and 3 or 4 from swan falls dam the other way. Lots of interesting stuff out there. Pictograms and old foundations, just hard to get to.

You wouldn't wanna carry me lol I guarantee but I can definitely show you where it is.

The cabin is actually between where Halverson road comes down off the rim and the lake itself. There are several old rock foundations and cabins along that stretch on the lake side of the river. Halverson is more like a series of puddles than a lake  Grin but there used to be bluegill in there and bass.

The Halverson road used to be very rough and narrow, just a jeep trail and I have not been on it for 20 years or so. With the vehicle closure I am not sure how close one can get that way but even walking from the rim would be better than coming from Celebration park. That whole road is basically big rocks with dirt sprinkled between em, definitely was a 4x4 trail. Also since it's become the birds of prey wildlife refuge I am uncertain if one can MD there now, although its unlikely anyone else will be along most days.

As for history I have heard there were some folks homesteading there and probably raising sheep or similar critters. Basque, chinese, hawaiian, black, and caucasions from all the different stories I've been told, as well as Shoshoni.  Would be interesting to see what turns up.

Great vernacular architecture - I didn't even notice the house at first. 1175 could be a cairn?

I couldn't say for sure Sue, although no history of cairns in this area that I know of. Mostly just no trees so they used the rocks which there were way plenty of I believe Smiley

My dad used to fish for sturgeon there many years ago. Here is a closer shot from the 50s
