my first fossils

I got out today.  [detecting] Nice day but a slow start.  :( Couple of 1 and 2 cent peaces, and lots of trash.
A young guy walks up to me and asked me if I found anything. I had nothing to show.
Told me that he was a fossils collector/hunter and that not far from where I was detecting, about 1 km down the road he was picking up fossils for years.
He pulled out of his pocket the two fossils on the photo and gave to me.
One is a shark tooth the other I need to identify. I was very surprised :o
Finish the day with a few coins, 3 of them silver threepences, a broach and a small kids ring. [clapp]
Guess where I will be going SOON.

:o that's a 5 cm tooth, very cool and they make great pendants. The other one is a shell I know that I've see this somewhere but cant remember where. they are found on rocks if I recall.

We have laws that prevent you from taking that stuff from BLM or Forestry Lands here.   Crock of Poop.

I can understand that the state want's to protect thing like these but on the other hand I also believe that private collections are very important to preserve our heritage. Museums just can't cope with all the stuff that's out there and then there's also the storage space.

Yea, it's ok for it to be lost in history and rot away but not to bring it to light and enjoy.    Something wrong with that.

Yes I think that the people that are fascinated by these fossils should be allowed to collect them, OK so let them pay the state 50$ for a license and impose some laws if you feel the need to but don't just say hey you can't pic it up that's all wrong in my book.

I disagree with that.   The Land Belongs to We the People.  Why should we pay for something that is ours?

Well you don't even really own the land that you live on, you actually only own the top surface of it down to a few cm/in, the state owns everything including you. I'm not saying that I agree it, it's just how it is.

Out4gold:
Advise well spoken.
The tooth he gave you although cool is well beyond museum quality.[Collectable for sure though]
The other fossil is a species of echinoid. [Sea urchin] Some people call them heart urchins.

Surface collecting should be legal across the board but alas it is one of the things
that the "law makers" have imposed because we rape the sites!
Little do they know that most significant finds are made by non-professionals.
Worse they will not or just won't listen.
Any significant find I have ever made is in the hands of museums or schools.
