It looks like a top piece off a iron fence. Did you find this near a old home place? It could also be a old auger bit of some type. But I think it is off the top of a wrought iron fence post.

hmmm i think your all wrong in your assumption of what this really your all barking up the wrong tree.
I have seen one of these before and they are extremely rare and never really found in such good condition because they usually rot away in the ground especially if its acidic.
The item of course is easily recognisable as an ancient Roman condom that has passed it sell by date and is in an unfit state to be used a 2nd time around.  Those Romans were rather kinky you know this one was a particular turn on because of its shape.  Grin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin CheesyGrin Cheesy

It's a rock on the ground, it's a specimen when you take it home.

Sam240, No fencing anywhere in the vicinity.
The specimen was taken directly from the matrix and does not react to a metal detector in an all metal/iron setting. I have a picture attached of a section of the matrix it came from as an example.
The fossilized aluvial sediment has a dinosaur gastrolith protruding from it and has several water worn shark teeth as well as other boney material throughout.
Nice try, I will continue to monitor any input anyone has on this specimen.

I will reconsider Lewis Jacobs' offer to examine it in SMU's laboratory with an understanding that it will be returned with minimal damage.

So far, the paleoentomologist has the upper hand on any positive identification.
Still though it does not exibit any of the norm for insect burrowing, but it does exibit some egg casing appearances.
Has anyone ever seen a shark egg casing before? It does have some of the same appearances but that would mean it was fossilized before being deposited in the matrix and a shark egg casing is soft material.
Identification is still a mystery......

Allen, by far you have one of the most ludicrist and possibily the funniest I have ever heard. I just had to reply to your post.  Idiot
BTW I'm still laughing. Funny Funny Funny

That is interesting. I really want to know what it is now. I wish my old Biology teacher was still around, he was really good about knowing the unknown.

Thank you for your input.
I just got an e-mail from a fellow collector and he suggested that a thumb spike
simular to the one the iguanodon displays or something damn near like it.
I told him now we're getting somewhere. That does seem likely.
He also added that what I have may only be the core. The original with possible sheathing
may have been considerably bigger.

From what I understand about Paleontology, we do have knowledge
about even half of the fauna that once existed.

Considering we're still finding previously unknown living species (not to mention new fossil species), I'd wager 50% is the upper limit.   Sounds to me like your friend might very well be on to something.
