BA, sometimes you just get lucky and see a really spectacular individual meteor.   I remember    when I was about 13 or 14 in October, I was outside running around the neighborhood and I saw a huge, bright meteor come streaking overhead.  I turned out to be a bolide (exploding meteor).  That mother blew up, I heard the explolsion, and it produced a lot of little babies that quickly disappeared.  What a sight!  What an experience!  It left a smoke trail that stayed in the sky about a full minute.  Unbelievable!  Glad I saw that one!

yeah, 1997, the year my wife and I were married was a truly great year for spectacular celestial viewing, starting with the lunar eclipse and Hale-Bopp on our wedding night and then about 6 or 7 months later, the largest meteor either of us had ever seen (and we have not seen it's match since....although the NYE meteor was probably number 2 on our list), followed by one of the better Leonid showings in my memory.
