Go Up Go Down

[hello]Hi everybody, I've been away for a while but now I'm back. Yesterday I was out at one of my haunts and came across some interesting trace fossils, Trace fossils are imprints left by ancient creatures. For example dinosaur foot prints are trace fossils. I came across a cache of fist size rocks with the best worm hole fossils I've ever seen. See photos. This is the first time I found ones where the holes actually penetrated the rock. Usually the hole is filled in with rock of a different type and the hole appears as an outline or sometimes as a "cast" of the original hole. These rocks have numerous holes that completely penetrate and are accompanied by some other interesting things such as toredo the "ship borer" clam holes, small pits created by rock boreing sponges, fossilzed mud cracks indicating a shallow water environment and fossil shell and mixed in. For the fossil collector this is a treasure trove....As soon as I came across this cache I started looking for the highly sought after "skull stone".  The skull stone is a stone shaped like a human skull that one may find on a beach where pebbles bored by the ship borer clam are tossed up. When I was a kid I found a perfect one on Vero Beach. Of course I didn't know that it was made by chance by marine organisms. The story I was told  was that pirates carved skull stones and left them where they buried their treasure. This one was about the size of a walnut and I carried it  to show until it came apart in the washing machine... Yesterday, after a considerable hunt I found another. Not as perfect as the first but there it was.
