Another interesting castle

The Commarque castle is located between Sarlat and Les Eyzies, in the commune of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in the Dordogne departement, southern France. It stands on a rocky outcrop in the valley of the river Beune.

History

The castle was founded during the 12th century, or possibly slightly prior to it, upon the request of the abbots of Sarlat. At this time the Ch?teau de Commarque was only a wooden tower, and its primary concerns were to discourage the ambitions of the Beynac family and to insure the safety of the valley. It was placed at the crossing of two important commercial roads: the road from P?rigueux to Cahors and the road from Brive-la-Gaillarde to Bergerac.

After the Beynac family took the control of the castle, the wooden tower was replaced by a stone keep. The fortification was enhanced, and the keep was gradually heightened until 18th century. The Beynacs, lords of the area, dwelt in the keep.

During the Hundred Years' War, it was captured by the English who held the place for several years.

Later during the French Wars of Religion, the castle was taken by the Catholics, due to the Beynacs being Protestant partisans.

The castle has been undergoing restoration since 1994. It has been listed since 1943 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.

There is a prehistoric cave under the castle. A treasure of jewels is hidden in the donjon of the castle.

Luc, the prehistoric cave under the castle sentence made me do some searching. "Under Commarque Castle there is a cave where Magdalenian man carved animals on the wall, notably a very beautiful life-sized horse" The Lascaux cave seems to be in the area, but it's not under Commarque, is it? Have you ever been there? Sue

Hey Sue, I'm very delighted to read you.

Effectively there is some prehistoric sites very nearly to the Commarque castle. The castle Commarque is in the same department as the caves

of Lascaux.

Enjoyed the links - a very interesting historic area. As a college student, I was inspired after studying the Lascaux art in class, to do a large oil painting of modern animals here in central US, pretending that I was that ancient artist and copying his style. A man bought it for his home for practically nothing - mostly reimbursed for the materials as I didn't have much $. Wish I would have at least taken a photograph now.

Hey Sue

A true artist whose talents are not recognized, what a pity. The painting is it one of your hobbies. Because I also like to draw, especially in pencil paper, but I have no time, quickly retired.

 Great

Luc

Hey Seldom

As you can see, I have a passion for old stones especially castles and monasteries, more if they have underground and that there is a story of treasure, then Luc is there to take notes and then go on learning. Now with Internet research texts and locations were much better.

 Wise  All the best

Luc

A very impressive fortification. I'm betting it was a costly business taking that tower unless they just waited it out. It looks in fantastic shape. Unfortunately the archeologic excavations link seems broken now.

It looks like that arched stairwell was made to roll barrels up and down perhaps? That's quite an intriguing feature.

Thanks for sharing it Luc! Smiley
