Go Up Go Down

Hi all, new to this little hobby, just acquired the above model and have an issue with it. I will add beforehand that I have an extensive background in electronics, but in a much different field, being TV and audio systems, as well as musical equipment. The problem with this old detector is that it has a really loud oscillating sound as soon as it is switched on. No amount of adjusting the controls has any effect on it. I might assume that this sound is it's normal notifying sound when an object is located, but the unit cannot be trimmed to quiet mode. Had a look at the circuit in these pages, and replaced all electro caps, and all of the IC's, as I had new ones in stock. The tune control pot is noted on the circuit as 10k, but it measures at around 220k out of circuit, bit strange that one, if the circuit is correct. It has two detector coils and both give the same result. Totally lost on it now, and not too sure what to check next.  Must add also, sometimes when switching on, there is no sound at all from the speaker, switch off and back on a few times and the full blast tone is back. Any help on this would be really appreciated.   The supply voltages are correct at the power switch, being 9 volts and 36 volts DC.

Also note that the coils on these could be faulty at times. Would there be a measurement across the pins out of circuit, that may give some indication of condition? Would it be possible that my issues with the unit could be a fault with the coils, and in both it must be. Many thanks.

I also have one. Here is what I have found.

The battery boxes need to have very clean connections and the mating pins on the main board need to sparkle. Clean them up and try again.

The coils may be bad or the connectors corroded. Even a little bit will affect operation. Clean the connector (both male and female) and try again.

The problem could also be capacitors but don't got poking around until you try the above suggestions. Either way, they will help your situation.

If the problem is not fixed, look for puffy or swollen electrolytic capacitors. Look for bulging bases or sides that stick out from the diameter. If you find any of those, replace them and try again. Make no substitutes. The design of those guys was quite advanced for the day and every component was a critical match to performance.

What model Deep Seeker do you have?    Does it have a button on the end of the handle?

With all controls in the middle have you tried to push the switch to the right or left as you tune it?   One is TR mode other VLF.

Hi there, yes, tried all controls mid position and toggled the switch, still blaring it's head off, so will have a look at these coils, starting to think that way. Would you know the result when the coil unit is unplugged from the head unit, then switching on? Would it be possible that the head unit is all good, but a coil issue maybe? Many thanks.

On further investigation, found 2 problems. The LM393 Comparator ic has failed, and the smaller of the two coil sets also failed. The coils are both reading on my meter in the larger unit, but the smaller one has one coil o/c. By removing the LM393 the unit appears to be able to be adjusted, with the sound going quieter with the sensitivity settings, but it obviously has a purpose, so it will be replaced.  I trust my posts may help someone with similar problems, as the technical stuff is my forte, but the machine in topic is all new to me. Many thanks for all the help given.
