Has anyone had luck changing the batteries with this model... If yes how did you do it?

I replaced my batteries two years ago after having used the same set since 1981. They were 25 years old and still functioning but I was going on a very important trip using the machine and replaced them as they were overdue to become unusable. The plastic seal had to be cut and the machine easily opened. I bought a new gasket for it but the old one was fine and I reused it. Spare gasket? Sure thing.

I used sub-C style batteries with the tabs on them. I spot welded the tabs together in the correct configuration (like the original) and soldered them back in to where I had removed the old ones. Fresh wire ties and tape finished the job and I put grease on the seal and closed her back up. I put a new seal on just to keep from accidentally bumping those little catches on the edges and opening the box.

The new batteries last me a full 8 hours plus. I have no idea how long they really last because I am quite exhausted after that long.

Hi there thanks for the quick response... where did you purchase the batteries? What is sub-C style... what were the voltages and the ratings in miliamps? I have seen a few postings on the Inet about a dummy battery as this take 7 batteries but has 8 (one is suppose to not be a battery??? what it is and why I don't know - hopefully someone out there knows why).

I have one Im trying to mod for land use.

Changed the batteries with NiMh Sub C.

I just used 8 batteries no big deal.

9.6 v no big deal if you dont mind the wieght of the extra battery.

Works fine for me.

Like these but not these!

Those batteries will work fine but there is a serious drawback to using NiMH batteries. They self discharge between charging and use which can bring the capacity down by as much as 20% even before you turn on the power. Keeping them on full charge will, not might, damage them over time. Thus, the old tried and true NiCad batteries are the best for the job. I got mine at Battery Book.

The technicians there took my old battery pack and spot welded a new one together for me in an hour. Went to lunch, came back and picked them up to install that afternoon. Yes, they are in Australia, but postage on one set of batteries is not that bad. Also, you do not have to actually send your old one in. Just send a snapshot of it along with a circuit diagram.

Each cell is 1.5 volts and they are wired in series. Sub-C means they are the same diameter as a C sized battery but shorter. Full sized C batteries will not fit in the spot set aside for the batteries.
