Ok. You win. When the ground balance goes a bit haywire, you are doomed. Simply run to the nearest trash receptacle and dump your Ace250 straight in. Then go and buy a new one. That'll take care of it.

Now do yourself a favor and contact Garrett. Nice guys.

GD SAID agree on my assessment. If you turn it off and on again, it will retune all settings to your current program  correct but by press and hold(<10 sec) the on/off button until you hear a beep. This will reset the EPROM   not by turning it off and on ,,,,, GD SAID Wrong   does not say  this in the manual ,,,,,,and, in particular, retune the automatic ground balance.,,,,,,,

I rented one just to check it out when we last discussed this and I thought you read what I found. I guess not. I also contacted Garrett about the ground balance. Right on their web page for the Ace250 is says the GB is automatic but I guess you don't comprehend that.

It DOES have ground balance but it is adjusted when you turn the machine on. So, if you turn it off, you can rebalance it for the conditions by turning it back on again. Oh, and I am an electronics design engineer with metal detector and embedded control design experience. But you believe whatever you wish. Just do the new guy a favor and stop contradicting what I write to him. Instead, perhaps you should contact Garrett and tell them that your machine is broken.

Outback,

This is where you should look:

See bullet item number two - second from the top. "Power on the detector with the touch of a button. Ace250 auto-adjusts for ground minerals and is ready to search!"

Garrett engineers said that should you move areas to a more mineralized area, you simply turn it off briefly and turn it back on. Not long enough to reset it to factory defaults but long enough for it to retune the ground balance. Yes, there is no button just for ground balance but the machine does adjust for it based on where you are standing when you first turn it on.

Now, can we please just get back to advising this guy about WHERE to look like he asked? Or are you going to pull a Cornelius on me?

Ahem. Here we go.

1. Turn the machine off as if you are going to put it in your closet. Not as if you want to reset the thing to factory defaults.

2. Wait a few seconds and turn it back on. During the power up sequence it will adjust itself anew by resetting the ground balance.

I never said you should reset it. That was you. Can we end this now? It's getting tiring. Aren't you tired of it?

SENSITIVITY Pushbutton?Push the
SENSITIVITY button to step through the four (4)
16
Garrett Metal Detectors
sensitivity levels, which are continuously shown
on the LCD screen.
Use higher sensitivity levels when searching
for very small or very deep targets. Use lower
sensitivity levels in locations where the detector is
behaving erratically due to excessive metallic trash
interference, high mineral soils, saltwater beaches,
or other metal detectors are present.

No where does it say this

That's right. I said it. It's a hidden feature.

The above answer's his Question

No, the above answers a question about sensitivity which lowers the gain and thereby the depth. My answer is not in the manual. I took the time to write to Garrett to be sure I was correct and I was. To adjust for dramatic environmental changes such as is found at the beach, do the following. Turn off the machine. Turn it back on after you are in the area in which your mineralization is highest. The machine is now automatically adjusted for that area. Their ground balance adjusts to the area in which it is turned on and first senses the ground. It is not preset, as you suggested long ago. It is set during the power up sequence.

Please tell me you don't really believe that the sensitivity adjustment compensates for salt water mineralization. All it does is hide it by making the detector less sensitive, not compensate for it. The ground balance does the compensation and that is the topic at hand. You've never even believed your machine had ground balance. Why not try what I have suggested just to satisfy your curiosity if nothing else. You don't even have to come back here to describe what happened. I'm not really all that interested in anything else except to ensure that the new user find this tip helpful.

It really does work. But you may never know.
