These are the laws for the different Bundesl?nder (Counties), as they stand at the moment, before the newer laws come into power.

No, unfortunately, they have things pretty well tied up  Angry Then they wonder why very few finds ever get reported ?  Idiot
Think about it, there have been severl cases in several bundesl?nder (Counties), where the land and properties have been in the same families possesion for more than 4 centuries, and they find treasure in the foundations or on the ground, and the archies then come along and say, that belongs to the government and you get no compensation. Not only that, but in some counties, if you?re unlucky, you could even get saddled with the costs of the archies digging and research !!!  Idiot No no!
This they are now trying to get as standard throughout Europe, and eventually worldwide, so be warned, there are lots of archies out there with lots of political influence just waiting to jump down our throats, and many are sneaking about on our forums !!
Some archies appreciate our work, and are glad of our assistance, however a great many are still jealous that we fiond things they can only dream of, and would prefer it destroyed and lost forever (Often overheard at archie conferences), than found by "Amateurs with no professional degrees, wielding electronic devices". That they often dig away the first half to one and a half meters and throw away everything in the spoil has no relevance, they say we destroy the archeological find !! Two  typical cases in Germany where the biggest gold and silver coin finds ever found, were thrown away by the archies in the spoil and dumped in the spoil miles away on a building site to be used as fill in. Metal detectorists decided to check the spoil, so followed the trucks, checked the spoil, found the coins, and reported  the finds to the archies. Thanks, no !! Instead, threats of prosection for illegal detecting !! Only after a lengthy court battle did they receive a small reward, and NO MENTION in the credits of the find. According to the musuems, the finds were found by the archies ??  Thumbs Down
But this is typical for the majority of the archies unfortunately.
BUT, like I said, there are archies that do like to work with us, and appreciate our work.   Great

really interesting and not really surprising... do you know more about this?

I think the people of  the archies and in many cases the local politicians want to have the perogative of interpretation. In Kalkriese, for example i've heared that the archaelogists only look for things they can use for sustain the thesis of a big roman Battlefield, because they need this thesis for tourism and the local mutual savings bank is a big sponsor of the archaoogists.

Check out in Google the Trier Museum  for the large collection of Roman Coins and other Artifacts, both lots found by detectorists in spoil, and NOT APPRECIATED by the archies at the time !!  No no!

What really gets me about the Archies is there roots are the same as ours.   What's more many of the founding fathers of archeology (even into the early days of the 20th century) were no more meticulous about there documentation that are some of our fellow metal detectorists...and a lot of them were a whole lot less scrupulous than most hobbyists.   I guess it all gets down to scale of operation and whether you have a university or the government funding you or not.     Seems to me that hobbyist finds are as likely to wind on display in museums as are Archie finds (which tend to wind up in boxes in store-rooms for "future  study" by "trained professionals" who will then keep most of the information and interpretations confined to the Archaeological community..

Or they write a book, and give a lot of lectures, for which they earn money which they put in their own pockets, not the univerities or governments  Wise

True...but they're books and lectures rarely get beyond the narrow archeological community----and to be honest, the ones I know that have published books that get beyond the academic community aren't making a lot of money either.

They seem to be making an awful lot of money out of the Himmels Scheibe von Nebra, which was found by detectorists (Due to the laws they would not have gotten a reward, so they illegally sold it, dumb but yeah, they got caught too !!). The Scheibe is now officially marked as having been found by an archeologist Huh?  Idiot

Some of you I wonder about.  Here's a MD Clu site in Germany. It's active and they find nice coins all the time. Like anyplace certain hstoric sites are limited and controlled access. Not to many of you detect in Gettysburg NBF.  But theres a  lot of private lands and open areas to explore. Join the club and make freinds and go for visit. You can arrange to detect with your nw freinds.
