Hello All

The majority of the community that would become Barnard was first surveyed and laid out in September, 1887. The town was named for John Fiske Barnard, a general manager for one of the Santa Fe Railroad's operating divisions at the time the Barnard branch was built.

The town thrived for years, but like many other Kansas towns, declined dramatically over the years. Numerous businesses shut down leaving vacant buildings throughout the town and the old school taught its last lessons in 1966.

Just goes to show those people who think all American ghost towns are out west, it ain't neccessarily so.   I'd love to be able to spend some time with that house.

Hello BA

You never know what treasures you can find in old houses like that. The house from the outside at least could possibly be a nice doer upper.

Hardluck  Huh?

I had to look, but Barnard is just a few counties from where my husband was raised. For no reason other than show and tell ghosties  Smiley here's an old stone building, now with a tin roof to help preserve it, that was a hospital for pioneers along the Oregon Trail. I've detected it, but never found a dadgum thing other than nails & trash. Sue

Hello Sue

Looks like an interesting ruin to visit. It is a pity that you did not find anything of historical interest. But some times those are the breaks.

Some times you just need a little luck on your side.

Believe I'm a jenny come lately with a detector. There's a stone school on the same farm and, the first time I went to detect it,  another person was already swinging away, said he hadn't found anything and that it had been detected a lot over the years. I found a horse shoe in the meadow nearby, but it hasn't brought me luck - yet. Sue

Sue I think you should cruise over to Barnard and detect it and post pics of the neat items you find. That place looks to interesting not to have some goodies  Smiley

My husband said the same thing - we should cruise over there some weekend  Smiley I've detected in a few places where towns were dozed to make them uninhabitable. . . kind of the opposite of ghost town occurring because people wanted to leave. Sue
