Anybody have any tips on detecting ghost towns? the one im going to is about a 3 hour drive, and right near a well used mountain biking path. I'm gonna hit it up early in the morning, and stay to the outskirts of the town site i think. Does anybody ever find gold nuggets just by fluking out? :D

Be prepared for lots of surface trash in the form of pieces of rotten sheet metal, tin cans, lots of nails, etc, etc.  But don't let the junk discourage you.   It hides the good stuff.   Also keep in mind that some of your best finds may be the ones you locate with your eyes (you might get lucky and find a really good unbroken bottle).   As for gold nuggets, hey, if people can carry it in their pocket, they can loose it carelessly.

Don't ever knock the junk, BA. A pal of mine used to do ghost towns and always threw the scrap metal in the back of the pickup. Paid for his gas that way every time. A galvanized pail full of nails can weight in at 30 pounds of iron and a full bed of sheet metal adds another couple of hundred pounds. With today's prices on copper, lead and brass - there should never be a trip that goes negative in anything but time.

Me, knock junk?.....never.  Lord knows I find enough.   One of the ways my club raises funds for our annual competitive hunt is through recycling scrap of all kinds.   Besides, if you're finding junk you at least know you're in the right area  :)

The only difference between picking up the junk in a park and picking it up at a ghost town is the size of your finds container.

Know what I mean?
