Go Up Go Down

Last week, on Oct. 16, 2013 my wife and I helped a granddaughter move to Redmond in central Oregon.  Our route took us through the old town of Shaniko.  On the way home the next day (10-17-13)  we stopped in Shaniko where I took pictures and drove around the small area of the townsite.  All the while I was wandering around town I never saw a single citizen of the town.  Reported to have a population of about 35 citizens, none were active or about that day!  Very interesting small town with a history of boom and bust since the 1860's.  I want to go back and do more in-depth explorations and visit with residents.

Sure looks like a great spot to detect. Is it a long distance from you?

It does look like a great place to detect!  It is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from my home.  But since my Granddaughter has moved to within about an hour of it, I might get the chance to visit it sooner than I think!  Probably be Spring before I can detect there (if I can get permission) because they get some pretty rough winters on the high desert plateau where it is located.

Here are a few more pictures of the town!

35 citizens and nobody there ??  Sounds kinda Spooky to me !!  LOL

Central and Eastern Oregon gets very cold , pretty soon the ground will be too frozen to metal detect .

Thanks, Eugene!   Yes, approx. 35 residents and nobody out.  It was a little spooky.  I guess I should have stopped by the Post office to see if anyone was there.  We did see evidence of habitation.  One place had three dogs in the back yard that were curious about us. (One of them was a Bassett Hound, like my ArfieBoy!)

No, I haven't done any detecting there.  I never made the time to get back there and within a few months my granddaughter had moved back home again. Since then she has moved on, married and is currently in Georgia.

Yes, Jeff, it really does!  It has been about 5 1/2 years since I've been there now.  Almost all the land is privately owned so anyone would have to be sure to get permission to detect it.  But it is inviting.  I have read that some people have done some detecting there but I haven't heard about any of their finds.

Here are some other pictures I took when I was there.
