Seldom, the person is looking for anyone who can download the proprietary firmware inside the microcontroller on the PC board, reverse engineer it to source code and then give it to him so he can modify it or even build a counterfeit copy of the device. All against international law, as you know. So he is asking you to do a criminal act. Nice guy. A good friend. I'm sure he'll raise his hands as the cuffs go on you and admit he asked you to do it.
My advice, don't crack his board. But then, you already knew that.
