Hi all,

I would be interested in building the ERL, and I tried to contact EPE for the PCB 388 board, but I found out that it is not listed in their online PCB Service catalogue. I also tried to contact them for availability but no reply so far.

Is there any other place to search for it?
Or, how easy would it be to make it from scratch following the printed layout in the relevant EPE magazine text?

Finally, I would like to ask for any suggestions on online electronics stores (preferably in Europe) to look for the ERL components mentioned in the above text.

Thanks
lazzy

...and, another question regarding the ERL:

would it be possible to set the unit up with an USB port instead of an RS-232 port (since the latter is rather an 'ancient' type of port for data transfer)?

OK guys. After much searching I found this cornucopia of information just sitting there waiting to be downloaded:

If it's components you are looking for, use EBay, I do. For circuit boards I use strip board but you can easily build your own with the right ingredients.

For a description of how this project works, read the PDF files:

Hi friends,

thanks for the valuable info.

I am still wondering about transforming the EPE unit to a USB unit, instead of a RS232...

any hints? (i'm not an electronics engineer, but I suppose a newer PIC and a relevant data transceiver chip will be necessary - at least)

Hi Lazzy.
The quickest and easiest way to convert to USB is use a USB to RS232 converter.

qrachma,

you mean a USB-to-serial conversion cable w/ driver?

will this be ok with data transferring?

i am asking this because i happen to have some other equipment with rs232 output facility, for which such a converter will be very handy, but i've heard that some conversion cables dont work with data transfer (usually work only with printing)

Lazzy,
we are using several usb serial converters here at Nokia in our test set ups with no problems (lack of serial ports on Dell PCs). The only time I had a problem was using one to interface to the output of an old GPS receiver and Hyperterminal could not read it. But I was using one just yesterday to talk to a PIC microcontroller programmer with no problem and regularly use one to interface to a climate chamber control. One thing I would say is get a decent one as the cheap Chinese ones can have some wierd drivers. It should come with a proper driver disc or be plug and play.

Cris.

If You don't know how PICs are programmed you need to start somewhere here:-

Undecided Yes, I know it's daunting. If you are not an engineer forget it. I am and it's been a tough learning curve for my old brain. A friend of mine taught this to some school children so it can't be that bad though!
