Hi I'm a newbie trying to decide between the GMT, the Infinium, the GPX 5000 and the Golden King - strange comparison I guess.  I have looked at them all and been told my area is highly mineralized - I want to hunt nuggets as well as old mine areas for caches and new ground. Really like the Golden King but it is basically a VLF right? - maybe no good in my locality. I would really appreciate any advice and experience you may have.

You didn't say where you live but according to Geologist,Author and nugget shooter Jim Straight, your best bet is a good nugget hunting VLF and his latest machine is  the Fisher Gold Bug Pro.  Another really good machine that you could pick up for a little cheaper is the GMT which is what I have and get the BLACK Sierra Gold Max coil which is a DD where the white Sierra Gold Max isn't and so prone to interference from the ground mineralization.

Both the GMT and the new Gold Bug Pro have the capability to locate areas with the highest amount of black sand which is usually an indicator of where the best gold is.

You should look into getting a gold test kit why you're  at it for sampling the soil.

Thanks Randy - would be great if the GMT could work for me here (I'm in the Okanagan area of Southern BC). Maybe a few samples is the way forward - I have not met any detectorists on my travels here in 5 years.

I have the Makro Jeotech and it can detect voids in the earth ie, old mine shafts and such, up to 4 meters.  Give me a page and I would like to come out on a hunt.

I use both the Nokta Golden King and Fisher Gold Bug Pro. Unless you are fortunate enough to live in a place with honking huge nuggets, the Nokta will not pick up smaller bits of Au. In the case of caches 1 to 2 meters down, it will serve you very well as long as you keep it away from salty beaches. BC Digger, one machine cannot do it all.

Today I took the Gold Bug Pro to one of the harshest beaches I know; wanted to test it's limits. The place is full of trash and black sand. The machine did not disappoint, ground balancing easily and there was only a slight chatter as each wave rolled over. In calmer spots, it was rock-stable. This little wonder is really GOOD.

There's much more fine gold than there are large nuggets. My suggestion is to get a Gold Bug Pro first, dig out enough of the yellow stuff then go buy a Nokta for your cache hunting needs.
