Does anybody have any recomendations for websites on building Ground penetrating radar and magentometers.  I am also interested in building sidescan sonars but cant find a good website so far for any of em.  I have an electronics back ground so building the needed components shouldnt be difficult if I can find some good plans.

sincerely
Calvin

Hi Calvin,

I'm not involved in creating electronics tech at all, but do enjoy reading about various projects. I believe Eugene had posted plans for a magnetometer in this site; you can download it once you made enough posts to become a regular member. Also try

; it's kinda like the sister site to thunting.com. They had a open sourced GPR project going on, but I don't know how far it's gotten. From what I gathered, the problem lies in making the antennae array and meshing it with software. Good luck!

Look up the name Willy Bayot here in this forum for updates on his magnetometer project.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

To construct a GPR is not that easy. At least you should know a lot of HF and Fast Switching and Sampling. And read all the patents of Thomas McEwan, they are so detailed, that everybody with the respective KnowHow is able to build one .... well nearly ... It is patented in some countries, but for private purposes no problem. And the Antenna is a special problem, solve it with simple dipols, at least at the beginning.

B.t.w.. Being a ham is not sufficient for GPR construction, dear om

Thanks for your input will definitely look into the patents by the person you mentioned.  I know being a ham isn't sufficient and neither is my Associates degree in electronics technologies,  But I do have other friends with even greater backgrounds in electronics.  I am just looking for interesting projects to try.  Again thank you for your suggestion and I will be looking in to the patents by the man you mentioned.

Guenter,

I just read the way my response came out on here and it kinda looked to me like it may have come off wrong.  I was being sincere in thanking you and just explaining a little more of my background.  If It did appear harsh to you that was not my intent.

Sincerely,
Calvin

Dear Calvin,

as a non native english guy I did not find any harsh aspect... ;-).
It might be possible the other way around...which certainly is not intended.
Because I am working with a GPR I first had to buy some sort of a real oscillograph (Surplus, otherwise not payable) not these toys, you are getting at the radio-shops and a spectrum analyzer up to 2GHz. Otherwise you get lost...in tracing problems, which aren't there ... or the other way around. And ... as I am an HF engineer I had to update my knowledge on 'fast switching signals', so all the problems are more switching related than HF-related.

73 and all the best
G.

@ubodlaj
I do have the device from that source you are mentioning. It is some sort of homebrewn handicraft work. But nevertheless ... it works! I detected some underground caves, closed at the surface.
Because of its dipole antennas it is not very useful for detecting whatever you are searching in the woods. The trees are reflecting too much. I have modified the whole thing in order to use it for field surveys in the range of 400 MHz  (bow-tie antennas, build into a cart, revised and corrected the board soldering, changed from plastic housing to metal housing, integrated the receive and transmit board into the main housing, integrated the battery into the main housing, ... etc.)

Dear Calvin,
I forgot one thing: I do have the magnetometer parts from Willy ( and J.Koehler, I think), not a fully completed device but only the boards. I constructed the coils fully surrounded by isopropyl alcohol , used another housing (Peli-Box), integrated the batteries. ... and cannot test the device at home or in the garden because of its high sensibility ;-).  And outside it was too cold so far. But next weekend I am on a celtic square enclosure for testing it. So far this device is a break-through and unfortunatly a desaster if in bad hands (from archaeological standpoint).

G.
