Home-made flux-gate magnetometer

I made a magnetometer using plans found in an old science project book---old enough that it was called a "magnetic field distortion detector." I am not a skilled electronic tinkerer and had never tackled anything this sophisticated, but I duly followed the instructions and wala!!!! it worked! I use it to confirm the locations of sunken steamboats in the old Missouri River, (now corn and bean fields). It's an exciting, rewarding hobby---slowly moving toward excavation.

congratulation!!
if u can manage to detect a sunkin boat, it will be useful in the field, yeahh i guess beer cans, bottle caps, hehehe
I mean, u need to adjust accuracy,and timing of your invention.

This is indeed a nice achievement!!
What is the principle of this mag? Is it a PPM or a fluxgate type?
WHat is the rate of reading you can get from it?

It is a close cousin to a flux-gate. The readings are instant and constant. The plans can be found in a book entitled: Laser, Phaser, Ion Ray Gun and other working space-age projects. By, Robert E. Iannini.

The ISBN is 0-8306-0604-1

If you google Abebooks you will get a site which has this book in stock. Mine cost about $12.00 shipped.

I have bought this book. I should get it in two or three weeks. I am curious to read this article to understand what are the basic principles of this circuit.

Hey Steamboathunter! Quite the achievement getting this put together from some plans. I am a gold prospector, have a Minelab XT70 detector and a small suction dredge. I have never done any hardrock mining but have located a place that was supposedly discovered about 10 years ago by a guy cutting in a road in the mountains here in the Portland, Oregon area. He was supposed to have opened up a large vein of quartz that assayed out very good. He covered it back up and only told his family about it. He has since passed away and I became aquainted with his grandson. We have located the place but it is only the general area and the ground is VERY difficult to dig and very had to get any equipment into. I was wondering if this magnetometer would be able to read this quartz vein? The soil is very mineralized but the vein is only supposed to be 3 to 4 feet deep. I have investigated GPR but it is a very expensive venture. If you think it will work, could you please tell me how I could get my hands on the plans you used? It would be very much appreciated.

Steamboadhunter has not been active sense 2010.

Unless the the Quartz has a significant Iron Content, a MAG is not going to find it. Shocked
