Like a lot of things, you can infer from another measurement that something is at work, perhaps an unknown something, and you can even give it a name. Telluric currents are like that. Nobody can really, truly PROVE they exist but we can infer from other measurements that SOMETHING is at work there. Measuring flux across a miles long telegraph line is taking an educated guess about what is happening.
