I have been considering purchasing a GPS for some time.  With all the advertising hype it is almost impossible to make a logical choice.  Any information on the pros and cons of various makes and models will be appreciated.    Thanks in advance.

hi you know what, i have a g.p.s. unit and this is my first one and what i have is an etrex legend  garmin and it was worth it and you can down load some more extra stuff in it and guess what its water proof to a certain depth. it is accurate and easy to use just have to experiment with it and set it up to you liking and has a back light in it when it gets dark outside for the batteries it will last  about 20 hrs or more  Smiley

Thanks for the hint. It being waterproof to a certain point is for sure a big advantage! How much did it cost?

Hey Guys and Gals.  I have been looking at several different models for quite some time thought I would ask for suggestions, but I guess that is like every thing else, everybody has an opinion.  I went ahead and bought a Delorme Model PN-20, it comes with complete U.S. topo and road maps, etc.  Nothing else to buy!  The unit cost approximatly $425.00, including the upgraded battery pack, car charger, home charger, etc.  I have never used a GPS, so as soon as it arrives I will begin to check it out and report my findings.

I have a Delorme PN20 as well.  It is very difficult to operate as compared to my old Garmin 12.  I have been intimidated by the many complex things it can do, but I am determined to master it.  I love the maps that can be put onto the machine.  You can even put on topo maps. The customer service is great and the forums are invaluable. I have many ghost town sites, old trails and roads, cabin sites, etc. that I am loading into the PN20.
The PN20 doesn't have maps of Europe, Christian....sorry.

I just purchased the Garmin Rino 130! Awesome little GPS. It also has a 2way radio up to 12 miles and weather channels. Real time compass and other features. Look around for the best price. Retail is 359.00 I paid 254.00 for mine. I just loaded topo maps in it.

Delorme is a mapping company who has some great ideas for products.  They also have a unit, the PN-20 that, if you try it and don't like it, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund.  I bought the PN-20, and worked with it for 3 weeks and returned it.  It is difficult to learn and being a technicaly  challanged old man.  For someone who has the knowledge to master its workings I am sure it would be a great unit.

Tim, the Rino sounds like a fun GPS.  What kind of maps can be loaded on it?  I like the idea of a radio where you can give your exact position to keep in good contact with a friend.
I am at a standstill with my Delorme GPS.  My older computer  crashed so I bought a new Apple.  It turns out the Delorme GPS is not supported on my Apple computer so I can't load any more waypoints on it.  I'll work out something thought.  I could put a windows program on the Mac.  I would like to have a laptop so maybe I will get a Windows type laptop which will then take the CD's from DeLorme.  It seems like there is always something that can go wrong.

Dan this is an awesome GPS. It allows you and other with rinos to see everyone in the area with icons of each person and their positions. It has a digital compass real time. You don't have to move for it to work. It has a sight and go feature. It comes with base maps of your country in my case USA and all outside states. It has a stopwatch, alarm clock and games!
