If all works out, next summer we're heading to Greece (wife's mother has a home there)  Anyone hear/aware of what the rules are for MDing over there?  I'm guessing the local officials would be ansy having to dig in public areas...I'm thinking I'll be safe on the in-laws property?  If anyone has any insight, sure would be appreicated..thanks..

Hello,

Greece has very very strict laws. Best to a little websearch on it as they might even be picky when they see that you bring in a detector with you.

As long as you stay on private land (and it not beeing archelogical area) you should be fine. However I think it is problematic to do detecting on public land there. Also taking your finds out of teh country with you might be difficult.

Please let us know what exactly you can find out.

On theother hand Greece is probably still one of the places that hols the most lost treasure. So I bet you would be able to find lots of great stuff there.

Happy Hunting,

Christian

Yep,
Total ban, don't even think of taking a detector with you.
It'll be seized at customs and you won't get it back!  Sad

Same it's with Turkey. It's a pitty considering the amount of relics to be found there but penalties are severe so I would advice anyone to obey by the law.

Regards,

Christian

Hello Bomber,

it's the same in Italy. Only public beaches are allowed. I know that there is a great amount of people illegally hunting ancient sites though but quite a few of the folks got improsined for doing this.

What you see being auctioned at many of the major auction houses these days, possibly comes from one of these digs.

Regards,

Christian
