I have been panning on the Salmon River below Salmon Idaho and find very fine gold almost anyplace along the river.  Very small and very little amounts but a flake (speck) or two every couple of pans.  Anybody ever get anything of substance out of the river?  I can't work very hard at it as I'm to darn old.

Hello Gbutcher . Just wondering if you ever considered a sensitive Gold Metal Detector like a Minelab or similar to help you find some larger nuggets  . Only get one , "IF you find out that there were some good Gold finds in the same River , in the past !!   Best of Luck

Welcome from New Mexico.

If your finding color, your doing good.

To do better, Location, Location, Location.

Try higher and lower from where your panning from.

See if it's better or not.

Up Stream?

First, welcome to the forums. Second, read up on prospecting techniques to see if you can find the source of the gold. If you join the GPAA, they have tons of information for you.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi Gbutcher

I'd suggest doing a little research on the Yankee Fork area near Challis which is south of Salmon. It was historically a very rich area of the Salmon river. Perhaps it's ner your location.

Historically many locations along the main Salmon and it's forks have produced gold in quantity.

Hi! Idaho,  I am up near Salmon and just search an hour or so twice a week.  I'll usually find some flower gold, very little, but keep checking different places to see if I might get some decent color.  Yankee Fork is about 70 miles from me and next summer may try there.  Heading for AZ next month for the winter and plan on sniping down there.  Who knows?  might actually find something but enjoying the hunt anyhow.
