Living in Idaho for the past four years has taught me one thing - there are some locals who carry guns and are just waiting for an opportunity to use their right to bare arms. I am very cautious where I metal detect. Good luck to you!

You are welcome Bill, if you have any questions about any spots just ask. I might have been there at one point or another Smiley It's close to time to start heading out! Smiley

Muttpuppy sorry you had a bad experience . Sad What part of Idaho are you in? I mostly trek around the southern part of the state.

I've known a couple people like that but for the most part they are all bluster. It's a lot scarier in the towns than out in the countryside usually Smiley The folk that come in from the big citys usually get frustrated with us slow movin farm boys.

Some of the folks around the hot mining areas can be a bit aggressive lately after the gold spike. I tend towards very out of the way places usually to pan.

I do usually carry a pistol for snakes of the crawly and 2 legged variety but I've never even come close to needing it in 30 some years of wandering the backwoods.  Smiley

I am in north of boise 90 miles.  Mostly, I just talk to old timers and learn about their family history and stay on private property. I know a gentleman who works his claim near the "gold fork" area, and am looking forward to going out and helping him some this summer.

That is very nice country. Lotta good gold spots thereabouts. Even diamonds. Lotta history in there too. Are you in the canyon or New Meadows side? I can think of a lot of spots I would like to MD up there in that canyon.

I like to head into the Warren area when I can, old family haunts. Got plans to head into the Frank Church this summer hopefully.

I live in southern  Idaho we pan down in the snake river (in certain areas) About 1.5 million yrs ago that creek cut a big swath of gold and deposited up and down the river, there were quite a few Chinese mining camps around twinfalls and Milne dam. My grandpa used to find a few nuggets or pickers once in awhile but all we see is flour but its fun anyway

Heathen its always a good time when you see some color in the pan. Smiley You ever work the dry washes? Some folks been getting nuggets from em I hear, I plan on doing a little hiking next month to try that out near Oreana.

I just bought a new style pan at the rock show last weekend and I am itching to get out and try it!

Up north in the Hells Canyon area there is a place I would like to check out with a detector sometime too.

actually the gold we find is from dry wash areas about 25ft above the river you have to find old gravel bars or big rock places the where the old river swilered the water around (why am I telling you this you already know LOL)

Always good to know where someone has success Smiley I figured it was probably pretty similar to my area. You ever hit the Challis area to the north? Some good areas on the Yankee Fork still I'd imagine. Thats another spot on my list to explore sometime soon.

Check em out on geotracker.gov

Its pretty accurate it seems. I've found a lot of claims that have been posted but they kinda forgot about that pesky fee....

My son and I are looking at a spot east of Idaho City for some weekend work. It's close (about an hour drive) and one of the possible locations of a gold shipment robbery just for added fun!  Grin
