I hoped we'd be able to get a few more hunts in before winter took hold, but it didn't work out that way.
We had a warm spell a few weeks back so we decided to hit an old boy scout camp that we'd hunted pretty hard in the past.
I met Twistidd and TreasureFiend at 9:30 in the morning and we thought we'd try another area of the camp that had produced some wheaties for TF in the summer.
We hit it hard for a few hours, and the only one with anything to show for it was Twistidd. He found an engraved Seiko watch which looked like it would work again with a new battery. We decided to leave and try another site that was nearby.
When we got to the parking lot we noticed someone walking towards us with a detector in hand. To make a long story short, his name was Mark and he knew the area we were in like the back of his hand. He told us stories of all the finds that he and his friends had made there and told us a few different areas to try.
We hid our enthusiasm until he left, and then it was three guys blabbing at once..... let's try this spot, no let's try over there until we settled on one area at the northern tip of the camp.
Joe found a few wheaties, while TreasureFiend and I found nothing but shotgun shells, tin foil and broken 9 volt bulbs. We split up, and not long after as I was deep in the woods I noticed what seemed to be an overgrown path. The path led to a small overgrown clearing. Within a minute I dug an ornate old spoon, so I slowed down my sweep speed, knowing that someone either lost the spoon where they picnicked or dropped it on the way out.
Within 10 feet of the spoon I got my first repeatable signal of the day. I dug a nice 6" deep plug, flipped it over and scanned the hole........nothing. I swept the plug and bingo, it was still in there. I broke the plug in half, and there in the top half was my big find for the day. It's amazing how one little dime can make up for 4 or 5 hours of digging and slipping in the mud and ice, but I sure warmed up when I saw that shiny Barber dime sitting in that pitch black dirt.
