Ghost Towns may be a good place to start.

Not meaning to sound fascetious, but the best place to start searching for treasure is in the library.   That's where you're going to find the books written by the old timers about your town and about towns that may have vanished.   Those books and the old newspapers the library has are going to tell you where people gathered to socialize and have fun (and lose money).  They're also going to tell you about bank robberies, and business that burnt down and people who either suddenly came into or lost large sums of money.  They'll also tell you who the "oddballs" were who might have had a stash someplace.   What's more, most of the libraries will also have collections of maps, so you can see how things have changed and locate where the old places were on your current maps.

But if you want places to coinshoot while you're developing your treasure leads, after you've first check to make sure there are no regulations to keep you from using your metal detector, head over to the parks in the older parts of town and work them, looking for clues as to which parts may have been used the most previously..
