Well, I really do not want to exagarate but I think this is one of the best finds I may have ever seen. Unfortunately it was not me who found this sword but my friend Jungle Jim.

A couple of years ago me, my brother Patrick and the Peterson family were hunting a wood. As in most cases my family dug many emoty holes while the Peterson family really hit it big!

Jim found several great relics on that day but the sword shown in this pictures was just amazing.

It is a medieval sword dating back to around 1400, in near perfect condition. No kidding, Jim even cut his fingers when digging it up! Most iron swords will be heavily rusted after such a long periode of time but this rare find was amazingly well preserved.

So you can bet, Europe still bears some treasures like this one, waiting to be uncovered.

Hello Dean,

It was not that long rom what I remember. I'd say about 60 cm cutting edge - BUT what was stunning is that it was all complete but for the wooden handle which hadn't survided the centuries that had passed.

I shoudl date back to around 1300 - 1400 and I have heared that these swords can sell for thousands of dollars!

That was a fun day.  I have some pictures of the sword when it was  still in the ground.  If I can find the photos I will post them to this forum.  The ground in this part of Germany is wonderful in almost preserving the metal intact.  In a different location the sword would have been a collection of rust.

Unfortunately Dave is right. There are many place where finds will be in a very poor condition. In a few decades the acid rain may have destroyed much of what is still left. SO we better hurry to recover it before then.

I sure would love to see these other pictures and also what the sword looks like now in cleaned condition.

Any place you hunt can have great soil, then half way across the same field you hit soil that just eats metal.
It's a crap shoot.
