Let's try this again.  I am trying to get permission to hunt this Historical House built in Indiana the 1850's. Not sure how much time I will have to hunt the area and would like some comments on where the experts would start.

If you have access to the inside, the time required to answer this will quadruple.

For the outside, start with the area right next to the doors (front, side and rear) and hunt in an expanding fan shaped area to wherever the coaches and vehicles were stopped to park and discharge passengers. Then do the most likely area for outdoor dining. Search any sheds and outbuildings, barns, dirt floor garages and root cellars. Pay close attention to the root cellar walls.

This is a huge project. You need to take me along.

Oh, and I split this topic from where you originally posted it so it would get more attention.

Whoa , that is a  magnificent home .    Anywhere around that place should be a discovery . I would start near the front entrance .  Search where there may have been a clothesline , hitching posts , carridge  shed  ,  ...GoldDigger 1950  supplied precise information and instructions , follow his advice .  Detecting  Let us know how yo do.   HH   Great

In the 'Beekrock' episode...several years ago....he claimed to have found a cache in the yard. According to Beekrock, he got a signal on his metal detector and dug down about three inches. He noted that the object appeared to be a pipe standing on end. Dug up the rest of the pipe and found a cache.

Here is a picture drawn by Beekrock of how that cache was hid. Good luck!

If it was build around the 1850's find where the old out house was and check along the paths leading to it. Also large houses built in them times required lots of man power many of them would camp for weeks close to the job site. If you can figure out were the workers camp was it may pay off.
Hunting inside the house will require more then a metal detector, a good UV light will be a must along with a small detector.

either of those could be REALLY interesting, but for very different reasons.   Both should give you a lot of "medical" finds, but I suspect that if one of the buildings was an asylum, you'll find some things that really make you scratch your head.

Well the Putnam County onehas been demolished. I remember seeing it on a Ghost show (another hobby, ghost hunting) and the owner tore it down cause he didnt want a bunch of people flocking all over the property. I am still going to ask and see if I can go around the surrounding area since it was a house built in the 1860's and an assylum.
