Hay Metal Head,

I am glad you asked that.

Most people would be supprised. It can be anywhere.
I do not use VID numbers nor even have a machine
with a display.

Silver chains, even fairly heavy ones can be hard to
pick up. If you use any disc, you can turn off a lot of
silver and silver plated brass, as well as gold chains.

MrBill says that the metal detector is trying to pick
up small peices of the chain.(MrBill Knows His Stuff)

If MrBill is correct, there is surely masking going on.
That will interfere with the machines ability to give
a "proper tone" or "proper response" or "solid VID
reading".

But, on the other hand, I know from my experience
that the more chain, and the more it is bunched up,
the easier it is to detect.

I had a 22.6 gram 14k gold chain give a strong signal
at around 10 inches deep in a wood chip pile. But the
discriminator said iron.

My knees buckeled on that one, and I fell on my but.t

That is the biggest gold item I have ever held in my
hand, that I can remember.

I dig everything in what I concider good jewelry sites.
Some chains are the worst signals and sound worthless.

They suprise me when they come out. They never sound
"like a chain".

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
