Thats not a bad idea GD photobucket would work. I think it requires the viewer to have an account too though which is a bit limiting.

Hmm maybe you didnt read correctly, hehehe sure you need an account to upload your pics to your own account there but they supply you with all the links that you can put and display your pics on here. When you have an account you upload your pics from your pc to the server once they are there you have an option to share those pics by displaying them on sites such as this. so you hit the share button then look for display links and look for the one that starts with [ img ]  copy that and paste it on here with your words and bingo you have pictures on here an your not using up Thuntings space so every ones happy have a go goto

I tend to disagree with this philosophy by 180? Alan.  I'd much prefer to see the images uploaded directly to this site rather than being served up by photobucket or any other image hosting site.  In the first place, if the images are hosted here we don't have to worry about them expiring at the place they're being hosted at, broken links, expired accounts, etc.  It usually renders a thread useless when a picture disappears, and pictures frequently disappear from offsite storage, or sometimes simply can't be served up due to network issues.  In the second place, we don't have to consume internet bandwidth everytime somebody views a thread.  Everytime a member loads a post that has an image link that is hosted offsite, that image has to be requested over the wire, and consumes bandwidth. Bandwidth is a lot more valuable than hard drive space.

This is just an administrative point of view from a resource management standpoint.  It's MUCH easier to host the images here from an administrative standpoint, and if we need a tutorial to guide users step by step how to post images on this site, I'll be glad to create it.  Honestly, if I had my way I'd disable hotlinking to other sites altogether.  It'd make administration so much easier, but unfortunately that would cripple many other functions on the board unrelated to images, so keeping it enabled is kind of a necessary evil.

Bigwater, I think a tutorial would be a nice addition.

NEWS FROM WASHINGTON.; OUR SPECIAL WASHINGTON DISPATCHES.
Published: April 2, 1862

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, April 1.

THE KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE.

"It appears from official correspondence that toward the close of last year, a letter, written by a Dr. HOPKINS, came into possession of the State Department. It was therein stated that an organization had been formed, by which the members of the Knights of the Golden Circle were to rush into the army and service of the Federal Government, and thus gain influence and position for carrying out their treasonable schemes; and, further, that Ex-President PIERCE was among its prominent members. When this letter was received, a note was sent to Ex-President PIERCE, inclosing an extract from it, saying: "Your name is connected with a secret league, the object of which is to overthrow the Government. Any information on the subject will be acceptable." Mr. PIERCE, in reply, expresses his surprise that even seeming credence should have been given to the charge; appeals to his general course as a complete refutation of the slander, and remarks that he never belonged to any secret league, society or association, and further objects to the form of the note. Secretary SEWARD, in reply, explains that this was written by WM. HUNTER, chief clerk of the Department; explains the circumstances under which he signed it; regrets that it gave offence, and offers an apology."

CCCalco, interesting article.   I wonder if there really was "official correspondence" or if this was an early instance of "disinformation" and propaganda?

Someone might find this interesting. It does infer that weapons were being moved in secret by the KGC, if it checks out. I haven't run it down myself. Just thought someone here might be able to use it.

Thanks Idaho.   That was another interesting read.   I knew that there were several attempts to arm "Copperheads" (southern sympathizers) throughout the Union and get them to cause sufficient trouble that troops would be diverted and the Northerners would grow really weary of the war.   The New York Draft riots are probably their widely known and best documented success.  And the attempt to smuggle in weapons from Canada is a well documented "failure".   This is the earliest "neutral" source I've seen that has specifically mentioned the KGC (but of course, I'm very much a Johnny-come-lately to treating KGC mentions as anything but asides).
