In the United States all navigable rivers are public to the high water mark, they are not State owned. Digging a wee little hole is harmless, as the next flood will rearrange as water desires. Most people who complain just want it all for themselves maybe or are ignorant of the laws.

Know Your River Rights

Sadly you may need deep pockets to defend your rights though.

The high water mark was probably  far from where they were digging in the first place. We don't  know how deep nor how big these holes were. There's plenty of idiots out there who give us all a bad name as I've seen it time and time again. That's why some cities have laws restricting metal detecting in the parks. We even have to have a permit to detect on state property because people were actually fighting over areas to detect.

Besides - That high water mark statement is a double edge sword. Hell- I've got a neighbor who owns some property on the river and it floods quite easily in the spring. You mean to tell me the Gov owns all that property and anyone can do as they please it? Flooding is surely a high water mark- ain't it?

Steve

Go Up Go Down

It has been a LONG time since I owned a metal detector.  When I was a kid I would take my Radio Shack detector to Central Park and find a few dollars in coins a day (plus a million bottle caps).  A lot of fun...  I wonder what the law is in New York now.  Especially since they are fining people for taking stuff from the trash (according to the City, they own it and anything of value which can be recycled is theirs, they have actually confiscated vehicles.)
