Go Up Go Down

I found a beautiful engagement ring valued around $4 - 5,000 by our local jewelers.  I wanted to see if it had been reported lost so I called my local police - who promptly came over and took it.  They said if it was unclaimed, it would become police property.  Is this true???  I asked if I had to give it to them, and they said I would be in possession of lost or stolen property and that was against the law.  Just trying to find out what my rights were - I really would like to see it reunited with it's owner - but if not, I would LOVE to keep it myself!  THANKS!!!

I am very sorry to hear about this incident. In Germany laws are different from the US and it is usually finder's keeper's.

I hope that someone on the board will be able to give you a precise answer. From my gut feelings however I would assume that the police did not act right uppong you.

I hope that you will be returned the ring or if it is returned to its former owner, at least be given a reward for finding it!

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Christian

I would not have called them he probally gave it to his wife.Your best bet, would have been looking in the lost and found adds. And if this ring say it was 3 inches deep, well it could have been there maybe 2 are 3 years and with a ring being lost that long and the value you say it is worth they would have had insurance on it,no lose there.  bottom line  they lost it,,, you found it,,,, and lost it again. and welcome to forum

Well, I think that if an item isn't claimed within a certain periode of time then it will for sure be handed back to its finder - YOU!

Now James had a good point! If it's been down several inches then I would also want to think that it's been lost quite a long time ago and thus will most probably not been claimed by its orginal owners.

Please let us know if you get any news.

i do not know of any statute that a law enforcement official could claim in order to
"take custody of your ring".

yes, i believe in honesty.i honestly believe you should have kept that ring.if someone was interested enough in it,they would surely make it known publicly.

i would not trust a cop for as far as a snail moves in a nanosecond.

sorry about your loss~i'll bet she was a beauty!

keep on swingin~you'll get more! Grin

I don't think there's a law that says finds like that are to be confiscated. It's probably some impetuous idiot that created his own law.

If you turn it into the Police...Make sure you get a reciept with full discription on it..take a photo if you can also.
If an item is unclaimed most times you will get it back.
On an othetr forum I have heard a few stories of people turning in items to the Police..then when they checked up on the items..they had been "thrown away" or lost ect...always get a reciept.
