Hello,
Does each state have different laws where you can treasure hunt.

Yes and you want to goto your local township before you just start digging.

     Not only does every state have different laws, but so does every county and city with in the state.   Automatically off limits are Indian Reservations (unless you are a member of the tribe and have permission), National Parks, and National Monuments.  National Forests and BLM lands have restrictions that you need to be aware (generally involving active claims and not running foul of the ARPA laws.

     You'll have to research the laws and regulations for each area you plan to hunt in.   Fortunately, the internet makes it pretty easy.    (For tips on how to do that, check past posts  Smiley )   (hint try "getting permission" or "city parks" or "county parks")

I wonder if we could detect in a memorial park. Any thoughts?

Some places are illegal and some are just morally wrong. Check here for details.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Well I got news for you. There is a YouTube video of a group metal detecting at the Houston Memorial Park (

). In Oregon metal detecting is allowed without a permit in Gov. Paterson Memorial SRS (see link:

)

I think it all depends on the facility. If people are buried there, then NO digging please, but Gov Patterson Memorial and the Houston Memorial are recreational facilities and metal detecting should not be a problem.

It gets back to GD's statement "Some places are illegal and some are just morally wrong."........sometimes having the right to do something still doesn't make it the right thing to do.   My first thought on reading memorial park was "cemetery" which I wouldn't hunt legal or not.   On the other hand a recreational park labeled Memorial but not connected to a battlefield or cemetery and used for general recreation is a whole nuther ball of wax......I woulnd't not hunt the grounds of Veteran's Memorial Stadium just because of the name, but on the other hand, I wouldn't hunt the Arizona Memorial even if it were legal to---and that includes the information center and the area where folks wait for the boats to the memorial (i.e.---any place past the parking lot)
