If a person were to find gold, whether it be coins, nuggets, or bars are there specific laws that prevent a person from melting it into any shape/form that they wish?

Not to my knowledge but melting it into Huh?Huh??? is a little more complicated. Of course the coins and bars may be worth many times their weight because of historical value. Nuggets also are worth more then just weight to collectors.

OK, here's the scenario, not that I'm going to find them but theoretically... If I found a wooden crate of gold bars and they're stamped on them U.S. Army, and I go and report my found treasure, then just like that the Army comes and claims them with no finders fee, nothing! All of it confiscated saying that it belonged to the Army. However.. what - say if I were to melt down my newly 'found' gold treasure.. or even yet scuff off all known markings on the gold bars - does that then become a crime?
See where I'm going with this?

First there are private collectors out there that will buy them. Second  not sure what if any claim the army are government will have on it.

It is illegal to deface or destroy United States currency. Only the feds have that privilege.  I have never heard of anyone going to jail over that issue unless they bleach out a five dollar bill and print a $50 on it.  Coins are always worth more intact than melted.

United States currency and coinage are governed by federal law through the U.S. Treasury Department. Generally, it is illegal to fraudulently deface, mutilate, impair, diminish, falsify, scales or lightens any coins minted or "coined" in the United States or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in use or circulation as money within the U.S. (18 U.S.C. 331)

The stamps on gold bars are only for purity and/or origin or government stamps.  You could stamp Micky Mouse on it, it's not currency.  And why tell anyone anything.  You are free to sell them to anyone.  If no one knows where it came from they cannot lay claim.

If you find some gold bars, and feel it's necessary, I will be happy to fence them for you and I will only charge 10% of the selling price.  Let me know.

Shushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.........

This is why I would not do it.  I don't like jail and I really like keeping my money.

United States Code
TITLE 18
PART I
CHAPTER 17
? 331. Mutilation, diminution, and falsification of coins

Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes,
falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of
the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current
or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States;
or whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or
sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into
the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered,
defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or
lightened? Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than
five years, or both.

I know a person that back in the 70's found three 60 some lb gold ingots marked US Gov.

He let it be known and they took two from him leaving him one.

These days, I wouldn't say squat.

Mine, Mine, Mine!  LOL!

key here is "fraudulently".....which is why coloring coins and cutting them into jewelry has been found to be legal (for that matter so is melting coins, although the mint has implemented regulations to prohibit the melting of 1-cent and 5-cent pieces)
