Coins are always worth more intact than melted

That's encouraging also about the nuggets.  As soon as I find some real silver coins and gold nuggets I'll be hunting collectors.

Not really.  "fraudulently".....  In law it means not by accident or not the purpose intent, ie: using a dime as a screwdriver.  And coloring coins and painting them or adding to  jewelry, it's not destroying the original coin for it is still intact.

Okay well just for kicks, how would you melt a gold "pendant" or "token" or gold anything?  That's what brought me to this thread when I saw the topic.

NO That was the US Gov laying claim to the bars stolen from a train.

He only payed taxes on the one he got to keep.

coloring them, maybe.....but cutting them as in these examples clearly does not leave the coin "intact"

bitbergaggie,

Just because there are some people doing this does not make it legal.  Robbing banks does not make it legal.  Turn them in...  There are many copyright laws being broken on this website.  They just don't know they are doing it.  If all laws were enforced there would be no one left to guard the jail.

I gave no definition of fraudulently and I am not here to get into an argument.  Read what I said.

You have a great day!

Again, here in this example though you guys are quoting laws regulating COINS.. not gold bars.. I totally understand all the rules/regulations regarding US currency, and I don't believe that this example would fall under that category.
But as most of you have indicated, sounds pretty much like finders keepers!

well, zul32, you did originally say "whether it be coins, nuggets, or bars" so we weren't really off thread.   And while I'm probably not alone in disagreeing with Roy about whether it's legal or not, I am in agreement with him and seldom that there's really no reason to have to melt it to get rid of it AND that by melting it you could lose a lot of the value it might otherwise have.

Its not illegal especially for old gold/silver coins that are no longer legal tender. There is no law against cutting  or plating coins as long as they are not use in a criminal endeavor. There is no law against melting old copper pennys and selling them for scrape.

There are many copyright laws being broken on this website.

Your are out of line Roy you do not need to point out things that you find fault with we know what goes on here.
