I did my part and filled out the survey and additionally added a lengthy comment at the end to help set the record straight on how responsible detectorists will practically coddle the land we search in comparison to many others that visit the parkl  I too cover up the holes I make, even on the beach.  Who would want to be responsible for spraining  beach-goer's ankle?  Not me.  Frankly, I've found that I can pinpoint, cut a plug and recover a target without leaving a discernable mark on the land (I have to admit the land must be reasonably moist for this to work).  So I have to echo the suggestion of getting your representative out with you on a search.  If they see the pains we go to in making sure we recover with minimal impact, I'm 99% sure they will quickly become an advocate for the hobby.

Thanks to all that are fighting this fight - we must do this to ensure our kids and grandkids can have the sweet pleasure of digging up a silver.

I stayed in a campground and asked one of the rangers on duty if I could md, he said yes as long as the grass was all put back as it was before. Two days later I was confronted by another ranger who said I couldn't dig at all (I even checked the rules on the state website and they were right along with the first ranger) I went and dug elsewhere just to keep the peace but it was a bit irritating.

My experience with rangers was always excellent. They even chatted with me sometimes and suggested places I could go find more coins and stuff.

On a different note, the other day I was watching Auction Kings and they highlighted a couple of archaeologists who were putting fossils they found for auction. Maybe that's a common practice among them  :-  Finding ancient stuff to make a profit?Huh?

The first one I spoke with was very nice, the second was very young probably just started this summer. I think maybe with more experience he will mellow out ( hopefully) Kinda reminds me of our college educated engineers that we have to retrain to the real world rather than what the books taught them. Hopefully Cook county will ease up on all the regulations and give out some common sense rules. Those that cause the troubles don't care about the rules anyhow

There are some folks working on a permit system. Hopefully it will transpire well for the hobby. Thanks for looking. If you have not done so, please complete the survey posted here and spread the word.  Wink
