This all depends !
On what kind of Federal land ?
National Forest, National Park, or, Huh?
To Look, On National Forest, none is required!
But!
If you find a big ONE! That is a Horse of a different color!
On a National Park, you have to be a recogized authority ...
Each case is different ...
You needed to ask for specific information on specific locations !

Alright-I have four areas two on State, one on BLM, one on National parks. How do I become a "recogized authority" to lay-clam (sorry, Im a newbe) or aquire legal agreements to search and find as well as keep a % of find.  Ive read some on how the feds have lock-down alot of land and change laws (and of course definations as well). Has anyone put together a good package, which is current, to outline hunters rights or regulations?? :-/

Don't hunt on any state or federal land unless you want your detector and car confiscated and you want to spend a few years where others use the detectors on you and your new name is "Baby Bubba".  You will wish you were a drug gangsta cuz they will get treated much better than you will if you appear to detect or have a detector in your car.

If you belong to a club or even pick up a copy of Western & Eastern Treasue or Lost Treasure Magazines you will find the information on what is generally legal, what is not legal and where to find the information that you need so you won't end up in the pokey.  I've even gotten flack on some state beaches during "season".  So be very, very careful.

Here are your links:
You could theoretically be arrested for just having a metal detector sitting in your car in a national park

I emailed both the province and federal parks depts here.

Federal parks it is at the discretion of the warden i was given as a reply. It varies from park to park I think. I know that here in Manitoba detectorists at Riding Mountain National park are told to leave the beach area. Of course historic sites are prohibited.

Provincially I have checked with Manitoba and Sask. I have detected in parks in both without a hassle. I requested permission recently at a local PP beach and was told go ahead, just don't dig the grass.  The same prohibition applies to Historic sites here in Manitoba. Off limits.

The best thing for you to do is to make an enquiry directly.

Hope this answers your question a bit.

Here in PA the state parks I just check in with the Park Ranger and I haven't had any problem so far.  They want you to use a probe on the surface and not dig up the ground underwater it's a whole different story...Smiley
