Being new and just getting started, I was confused on how to Detect legally and morally. I made an request through State DNR (department of natural resources), and I was given a little information I would to share for anyone interested detecting in New Mexico.

For State Parks:
You will need to contact NM State Parks about their rules and regulations for their property. You can visit their website at

Please Register or Login

http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/Index.htm.
Same will go for any property owned by BLM or Forest Service.
To use a metal detector on State Game Commission owned land, please contact our Archeologist Jack Young at 505-476-8141.

The DNR Office:
Main Office:
NM Dept of Game & Fish
Public Information & Outreach
1 Wildlife Way/PO Box 25112
Santa Fe, NM 87507
Ph: (505) 476-8000

NE Area Office
575-445-2311

SW Area Office
575-532-2100

SE Area Office
575-624-6135

You will notice an Archeologist is included, there are just some things I wont dig, or belongs in a museum. Also if you come across a site that you may wish to leave to a professional.

As I explore I will add to this list.

Good Luck

BLM lands are not the same Forest lands.

Different rules all together.

The Forest Service has Compounding Laws on top of the BLM regs.  You can't disturb a blade of grass without a permit.

Detecting, The BLM is the most giving.  Forest you can't dig, or disturb gold panning is allowed below the water line in rivers and creeks.  State land is a NO NO.  Federal and Indian Reserves are a NO NO.

In General, New Mexico follows the 1906 antiquities act.

Don't stir up the Bees!    Wise

Any thing more then 50 years old fall in the realm.

Was 100 years.

Bugs me no end that something has to be younger than I am to be "legal"......especially since the 20th century (1900-2001) is the best and most widely documented/analyzed century in the history of mankind.

Cracks me up too!

Not long ago, there was a guy given a $700.00 ticket for taking some square nails he found on forest lands.

They interpret things different then the rest of the world.

BLM Rangers would look at them say Cool, and tell you were to find more.

Meteorites have been INTERPIDED as Antiquities and they say they belong to the State or Nation if found on State, Forest or BLM lands now.

Horse Shit.

What's next Rocks?

Were all nothing but star dust.

Good God!    I'm a Antiquity.    LOL!

That's the ticket!! I'll just tell them: "Hey, I'm 75 years old, I fall under the antiquities act, so just leave me alone".  Grin A mobile antique.  Grin Grin
