Good question you pose. The other members would be able to answer better. I was wondering the same thing, if there is no evidence of an owner, don't know if asking the neighbors would help, or hinder our prospects of detecting.

Hm.  I doubt that the government can own the land, if they do they can develop it.  Like I said though, I doubt it.  Take GoldDigger1950's advice.

How to handle digging on such places? First off, and with most places, refilling the holes back up is a must.  I would put it in a plastic little bucket or metal and put your dirt in there, of course after scanning the dirt to make sure there is no items in it, if you use a metal bucket. 

Instead of cutting a plug, cut maybe like a flap of some kind.  That way, you don't sever the roots from the grass and kill that patch of grass, depending on if they like the lawn to be neat looking.

 abandoned   usually mean's unkept lawn with lot's of weed's  being neat doesnt count ,,Most likely look better after you leave  ,,,so I would not worry about getting to fancy on the the way you retrieve a target  ,,I hunt park's  and only use a screwdriver and vibra probe  with no trace I was there  ,

Oh no.  I was just suggesting that they could have possibly owned it....but more than likely not.  I would think that they would have done something with it by now if that were the case.
