Sometimes a township takes possesion of a property if taxes have not been paid or a death occurs with no will in place and no family. It is rare but it does happen.

Howdy, and great question you pose here... I have had to on several occasions go to my County Office building and look up tax records or records of property switching hands to find an owner...If I cannot find an owner, like someone else said above, I ask the local Johnny Law if it would be OK...If they are not gonna bug me, who will??  You should strive to leave any place that you hunt, in as good, or better condition than when you arrived...it is just common sense, and gives you many brownie points with whoever may be watchin ya...You never know...

HH,

Hey Tabdog,
Yes, I know several of the police officers around here, but I think I'll behave myself and if it's a no no in certain area's I'll just let them be......I'm one of those people that doesn't have to search for trouble...lol  Yes I live in Florida, not far from the Ocala area.
I have to say I am really pleased to find this site. I don't get much time on here but it will be nice to hear what everyone gives for advice.  I have only been out a few times since I got my detector and I am already hooked!
   Thanks for your help

Oh yeah...that picture sums it up! These two places have been abandoned for many years with no upkeep of the buildings or yard.....I just really don't want to step on anyone's toes.
Thanks for your help

If you really want to find the owners, do contact the county tax assessor's office. They are required to keep a list of property owners for the purpose of collecting property taxes. It really does work, sometimes. That research thing. Research of any site should always include the tax assessor. Believe it.

Sometimes a phone call works. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Hi HH,
I make sure that when I am done digging a hole I fill it in. I also carry a spare bag to put trash in.....it just seems like the right thing to do....besides I am sure all of us have at one time or another stepped into a hole which leads to either a sprained ankle or thrown the good ole back out! Your right about the police, I know several so I will also ask them if it is a problem.  Thanks for your help

Hay Red digger,

Most of us pride our selves on leaving
as little damage as possible, if the
site requires it.

Even in the woods, I do not leave a hole.

It may not be that pretty in tha woods,
but I do not want to damage property, or
shed a bad light on other THers.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Hello Everyone . There is one thing I forgot on this subject . In the city I like to go to very old houses , so if the owner is not home and if your Metal Detector has a very accurate Target I.D. "that you have learned to trust" , you can simply sweep the property around the public sidewalks and utility easements "8 feet in from the street curb" , if you I.D something great then leave a note "Asking Permission" on the door and in the mailbox and come back later .
Regards........Eugene
